Feed:
Black Oil Sunflower: An excellent all-purpose seed for most species. This oil rich seed has a soft shell that is easy for our birds to crack open.
Enjoyed by Goldfinches, Chickadees, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, Stellar Jays, House Finches, Purple Finches, White-crowned Sparrows.

Sunflower Chips: The best all-around seed for most species, with no waste and no mess. Lack of hulls and smaller pieces make these more accessible to smaller species and in the winter when bird’s energy budgets are stressed, these provide more nutrition for less effort.
For all seed eating species especially Goldfinches, Song Sparrows and other small finch and sparrow species.

Nyjer/Thistle Seed: The number one finch food. Especially enjoyed by Goldfinches and Pine Siskins. Great for feeders dedicated to the small birds. It is generally ignored by squirrels.

Eaten by Goldfinches, House Finches, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, Chickadees, Song Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos.

Striped Sunflower Seed: An excellent seed for larger-billed seed eating birds, especially Black-headed and Evening Grosbeaks. Many people have replaced this in whole or in part with black oil sunflower seed.
Enjoyed by Black-headed Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, Stellar's Jays, Chickadees, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, House Finches

Millet: A common "filler" ingredient in mixes because of its low cost and heavy weight, this food is tossed out of feeders by most birds. It should be used in ground feeders or low hanging tray feeders, because most birds who eat it will not come to tube feeders.

A favorite seed of Juncos and Mourning Doves, this seed is also eaten by Towhees, Golden-crowned Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Blackbirds and Cowbirds.

Peanut Hearts: A good addition to tube and ground mixes, smaller kernel size makes this more accessible to the smaller species. Higher nutritional value than whole peanuts.

Chickadees, House Finches, Sparrows, Mourning Doves, Jays, Juncos, Woodpeckers.

Shelled Peanuts: Although they can be added to your mix, these are generally fed in a wire mesh tube as they are a favorite food of clinging birds like Woodpeckers, Nuthatches & Chickadees.

Chickadees, House Finches, Sparrows, Mourning Doves, Jays, Juncos, Woodpeckers, Squirrels.

Whole Peanuts In-Shell: These raw, unsalted nuts are usually added to your open tray or platform feeder for birds or placed in a "box" type feeder for squirrels.

Squirrels, Chipmunks, Chickadees, Jays, Large Woodpeckers.
