Bird Baths

Birds need clean water for drinking, to help them digest food and for bathing, so they can keep their feathers clean and warm. The bath can be a joyous center of activity. Many birds like robins, waxwings, and tanagers, that don’t come to feeders, will visit for a drink or bath.

Make sure there is perching room nearby for birds to do the preening that waterproofs feathers. They don’t fly well when wet. Beware! Cats will take advantage of baths that are placed too low.

Pick a bath that is no more than two inches deep. Birds have short legs. A rough surface helps them keep their footing. Keep water clean and free of algae. Put natural enzymes in to help with this. Hummingbirds love showers. A mister spraying on leaves will make them happy.
